Imke ( deel 1)
Imke wordt een maand te vroeg geboren na een zware bevalling. Het duurt een tijdje, voor ons leek het wel een eeuwigheid, voor ze ademde en in de armen van Freija mocht liggen. Een gelukzalig moment om papa en mama te mogen zijn. Want zij is de mooiste van de hele wereld!!
Kort hierna moet Imke nog wat bekomen in de couveuse. Ze is wat zwakjes na haar bevalling en ze is tenslotte te vroeg geboren. Al snel komen haar eerste bewonderaars kijken naar haar en vliegen de felicitaties in het rond. De voeding lukt nog niet en Imke krijgt haar 'voeding' via een infuus.

Imke is 1 dagje oud en we krijgen heel wat bezoek en cadeautjes voor haar. We zijn heel gelukkig en trots op ons meisje maar ze moet nog aansterken en in gewicht toenemen. Dit komt omdat ze een longinfectie heeft opgelopen en antbiotica moet innemen. Ze blijft nog wel een tijdje in de couveuse waar ze heel goed verzorgt wordt door de verpleegsters van Jan Palfijn ziekenhuis. Wij zweten ons te pletter op de kamer want het is bijzonder warm.

Na een aantal observaties denkt de kinderarts toch dat er een probleem zou zijn met haar hartje. Ademen gaat moeilijk en ze blijft zwakjes. Borstvoeding geven lukt hierdoor ook niet. Men stelt voor om Imke over te brengen naar UZA in Antwerpen om haar hart grondiger te onderzoeken.

Imke wordt met een kleine vervoerscouveuse overgebracht naar de intensieve zorg van UZA in Antwerpen. Ik rij zelf met de wagen en Freija moet Toon nog snel optrommelen want in de ziekenwagen is geen plaats meer. Niet veel later wordt haar hartje met een speciale echo grondig nagekeken door de kindercardioloog en daar volgt het vreselijke verdikt. Ze heeft een zware, ernstige hartafwijking. We worden dan een tijd lang ( een uur of 2) aan ons lot overgelaten in een klein kamertje van 2 op 2 meter en nemen op dat moment al een beetje afscheid van haar. Allerlei emoties gieren door je lichaam en je hebt enkel en alleen elkaar. Hierdoor stopt ook de melkproduktie bij Freija zodat men moet overschakelen op gewone melk. Dan 
eindelijk kregen we verder uitleg met tekeningen van het probleem en hieruit blijkt dat Imke een soort van hypoplastisch linkerhart syndroom heeft. Jammer genoeg is dit één van de zwaarste hartafwijkingen die er mogelijk zijn want dit betekent dat haar linkse hartkamer niet genoeg ontwikkeld is. Verder zijn er ook nog enkele verbindingen die haar bloed van en naar het hart moeten pompen niet op de juiste plaats aanwezig en is de boog van de aorta te smal. Enkel 3 zware open hartoperaties kunnen haar redden. De eerste moet al snel plaatsvinden want anders red ze het niet. Verder onderzoeken ( nieren, beenderen, hersenen, ...) moeten uitwijzen of een operatie nog wel mogelijk is. Men noemt deze de 'Norwood' operatie. Dit is een zeer zware operatie en de slaagkansen zijn 50%
Wij zijn verplicht om Imke daar achter te laten en vertrekken volledig overstuur naar huis. Daar wacht de familie die al op de hoogte gebracht is. De verslagenheid is enorm en iedereen zit stuk van verdriet. Waarom wij!! Die vraag gaat nog heel vaak door ons hoofd spoken maar zonder antwoord.

Uiteraard bezoeken wij onze kleine meid elke dag in het ziekenhuis. Men doet heel wat vervelende onderzoeken bij haar om te kijken of er niet nog meer aan de hand is. Ondertussen kunnen we Imke koesteren en vastnemen. Jammer genoeg is het moeilijk om ze te verzorgen. Haar hartslag en saturatie wordt 24 op 24 uur gemeten en ze hangt dan ook vol met allerlei draadjes. De alarmpjes piepen daar in de intensieve de hele dag door maar we zijn bij onze dochter. Imke krijgt in Antwerpen de beste zorgen al is het voor Freija helemaal niet zo leuk om Imke niet zelf te kunnen verzorgen en te wassen. Het moederinstinct krijgt de bovenhand.

Tijdens deze dagen doen wij niet veel meer dan over en weer rijden naar het ziekenhuis in Antwerpen en praten. Zo hadden we een telefonisch gesprek met Eef. Zij is de moeder van Mauk. Mauk heeft een hypoplastisch linkerhart syndroom en is 1 van de eerste in Belgie die geopereerd is geworden een 7 tal jaar geleden. Bij hem zijn de 3 operaties gelukt en Mauk is een gelukkig mooi ventje. De levensverwachtingen na deze operaties liggen rond de 80 %. Hierdoor voelen wij sterk aan dat we niet de enige zijn met dergelijk problemen en weten we dat er overlevingskansen zijn. Ook het gesprek met dokter Embrechts die ons vertelde dat verdriet slijt maar schuld niet deed ons besluiten om door te gaan met vechten voor het leven van ons Imke.

Op deze dag komen we samen met de kindercardioloog en de mensen die het chromosone onderzoek hebben gedaan. Er zijn geen verdere afwijkingen meer gevonden en daarom beslissen wij om de eerste operatie te laten doorgaan. Hiervoor moeten we naar Gent omdat men geen hartoperaties doet in Antwerpen.

In Gent komen wij aan in een hele andere wereld. Dit ziekenhuis lijkt een fabriek met gebouwen uit de jaren 50-60. Na een tijdje zoeken komen wij op de plaats waar ze Imke net naartoe hebben gebracht. De neonatologie. Bij deze woorden komen onze haren recht te staan want wij zijn daar heel erg slecht 'ontvangen'. Imke lag daar in een couveuse met ongeveer 18 andere kinderen of prematuren in een veel te kleine ruimte. Een kwartiertje later komt de hoofdverpleegkundige naar ons Imke kijken. Hij begint daar onmiddellijk onze kleine meid af te breken. Hij zag van alles aan haar en we moesten toch maar eens goed nadenken of we met haar wel verder wilde gaan. Dat was net hetgene dat wij de dag daarvoor samen hadden besproken met elkaar. Gelukkig zijn wij 2 rustige mensen of wij hadden die betreffende dokter iets aangedaan. Omdat het een verlengd weekend was waren de psyghologe en maatschappelijk assistente er ook niet om ons op te vangen. Dit moment was één van de moeilijkste die we meegemaakt hebben. Ons vertrouwen in de neonatologie, in Gent, in de dokters en verplegend personeel was helemaal verdwenen en ...morgen is er de operatie !
